Wake me when it’s over, Detroit

I just keep wanting to wake up to a sunny day and none of this ever happened.

Yesterday, on the same day that the US Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which was a huge victory for gays and progressive-minded people everywhere, openly gay Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh disappeared and no one can find him or has heard from him. The stench surrounding his disappearance has to do with accusations that Pugh had an ‘inappropriate’ relationship with a 17-year-old high school student. His mother apparently plans to sue Pugh, the Detroit Public Schools, Frederick Douglass Academy (where the young man was enrolled when the alleged incidents took place) and the City of Detroit. According to the mother, Pugh showered the youngster with gifts and some money as well. And as Councilmember Ken Cockrel points out, if Pugh did nothing wrong then why has he gone into hiding? Meanwhile Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr has stripped Pugh of his powers and his salary.

Innocent until proven guilty, but I just get this sick feeling in my stomach about all this that I don’t want to have…

Say it ain’t so, Charles. Just say it ain’t so.
