Kanye West gives new meaning to confederate flag; and it’s the same

I’m not a big follower of rap, so it would be pointless for me to try to analyze in a rap context whatever the hell Kanye West thinks he’s doing draping himself in the blood of the Confederate flag and proclaiming himself the arbiter of  New Hip by declaring it his own. But I must say that I question those who continue to insist that this guy is some kind of genius, mainly because most geniuses aren’t this good at doing stupid shit and believing it is a work of art because they  did it.

His exact quote on CNN.com was as follows:

“The Confederate flag represented slavery in a way. That’s my abstract take on what I know about it, right? So I wrote the song, ‘New Slaves.’ So I took the Confederate flag and made it my flag. It’s my flag now. Now what you gonna do?”

Gee Kanye, I dunno. What are we gonna do with you? If this was supposed to be a Madonna-style publicity stunt designed to pound all the sensitive buttons with a sledge hammer and make the Pavlovian media come running then, well, OK. I guess that makes you a good student of learning how to make the headlines and get tongues to waggin’. But if this is all about dragging your nails down the chalkboard to get attention then just say so. No need to try and pose as a pseudo intellectual who has something worthwhile to say about history and how to lessen the sting of one of slavery’s most potent symbols by cashing in on it.

Just because the stars ‘n bars may have helped Kanye West move more product does not signify the arrival of a post racial America.

THANK. YOU. I was saying the same thing. I get that he’s learned and whatnot, but his articulation SUCKS! I need him to really explain it more. All he does is give vague explanations and then get MAD at people for not understanding him. He needs a seat.
