DOJ needs to check itself – or get checked

You need to tell us something, and it needs to be a lot better than what you’ve told us so far

I’m doing my best to wait and hear what the Department of Justice – and hopefully President Obama – has to say before I blow up about this thing. I am holding out hope that…hell, I dunno. Something. Because if this story about the DOJ putting out super secret subpoenas for the phone numbers of AP reporters turns out to be even halfway true then this is way over the line. It’s not Nixon, but it’s close enough that somebody needs to have their chain yanked and quick.

From Huffpo:

WASHINGTON — Members of President Barack Obama’s own party slammed his Justice Department’s secret gathering of reporters’ phone records as inexcusable and sickening on Tuesday, suggesting that Congress may have to act to protect the freedom of the press.

The Associated Press on Monday revealed that in April and May of last year, the Justice Department had seized phone records for at least six individual AP journalists and at least 20 AP phone lines, used by up to 100 reporters, as part of a leak investigation. Sally Buzbee, the AP’s Washington bureau chief, was among those targeted.

AP President and CEO Gary Pruitt said the department’s actions represented “a serious interference with the AP’s constitutional rights to gather and report the news.”

I’ve said before and will say again that I am unapologetic about my fervent support of this President and this does not change that. It would take something really God-awful for me to lose my faith in the man and his administration and this does not qualify. Having said that, I’ve been a journalist for for more than 20 years and I just can’t stare at the ceiling, twiddle my thumbs and start whistling every time my team makes a bad call. And although the facts are not all in yet, and innocent until proven guilty should still apply, this just doesn’t look good.

The IRS deal that the Repubs are trying to hang around POTUS’ neck? Bullshit. The Benghazi retread? The same. But this? This is something else altogether, and it could not have come at a worse time.
