Apple has avoided paying lots of taxes. Gee. What a shocker

It’s an Apple world. We just rent.

You may or may not have heard about this latest story with Apple, where they have managed to essentially hide billions of dollars in income from taxation using some kind of complex money-shuttling scheme involving Ireland and a few other countries. Pretty interesting, but not exactly a shocking development.

I’m about as far from being a math or tax whiz as far can get, so any attempt by me to analyze the ins and outs of how this particular version of the corporate tax evasion game was played would be nothing short of entertaining and comical. But one thing I can say with a fair amount of certainty is that when it comes to great big companies and how they deal with their great big profits, it isn’t exactly a recent development that they do everything they can to hold onto as much of those profits as possible. One thing you can do with a lot of money is spend lots of money on salaries for really smart people whose only job is to make sure you get to stay richer than whoever that is on your tail breathing down your neck trying to make more money than you.

And that, folks, is pretty much how the game is played. Big companies become bigger companies, make bigger money, no small amount of which is used in the halls of Congress via lobbyists to ensure that they can keep making bigger money. Stories like the one in the New York Times (linked to above) alerting those of us down here on the ground to the fact that, yep, this is still going on, will cause us to frown and shake our heads in disgust. And some of us may even hope “maybe this time…”

And then, after clearing our throat and doing a few stretches, we will jump once into the toilet bowl and commence treading water.
