Keith Profile 2Speeches. Newsletters. Editorials. Blogs. Articles. Ghostwriting. If it involves words and creativity, then that’s what I do.

I have been a professional journalist, writer, and musician for more than 30 years. I have worked as a reporter for the Denver Post, the Los Angeles Times, The Ann Arbor News, the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel, and the Detroit Free Press. I also served as a member of the editorial board and was a regularly featured columnist for both the Sun Sentinel and the Free Press. I authored a nationally syndicated column for Universal Press Syndicate for three years beginning in 1993.

In July of 1995, I was one of many reporters to walk out of the Free Press and Detroit News in support of what became the longest newspaper strike in U.S. history, stretching out for five years. When the strike began, I had been at the Free Press for just over two years. Not much later, I began writing a regular bi-weekly column for the Metro Times which ran for more than five years entitled “Free Your Mind” until 2006 when I began a five-year stint as Director of Communications/Community Outreach for the Office of the Wayne County Treasurer. Prior to working for the Treasurer, I served as senior editor of the Michigan Chronicle for three years, while still writing my Metro Times column. I have won a number of journalism awards, both locally and nationally. Currently I work together with my wife, Pamela Hilliard Owens, operating Writing It Right For You, the writing services company she founded five years ago in 2008. My humorous sci-fi/fantasy/detective novel, The Mayonnaise Murders, is currently available on Amazon. The sequel is due to be released in December, 2013.

Musically speaking, it was Detroit that re-ignited my passion for playing the guitar. Not quite a year after arriving in the city I formed Blue Spirit Tribe, a blues band which performed regularly around the Detroit Metro area for more than three years. Since that time I have performed with a wide variety of local musicians including Luther “Bad Man” Keith, Harmonica Shaw, Priscilla Price, Kenny Miller, and others.  I am currently working with own jazz fusion/funk band, Freedom Underground, whose album “Between the Funk” is scheduled for national release through Virtuoso Music and Distribution in late 2013.
